Capacity building programme for Jharkhand “JOHAR” officials

With the objective of enhancing knowledge and skill of the rural farming folk for ensuring their livelihood security and thereby achieve the aim of doubling of farmers' income, Government of Jharkhand has established the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society under the aegis of Rural Development Department and under this society, they are running one project namely Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth Project (JOHAR) to enhance and diversify household income in select farm and non‐farm sectors for targeted beneficiaries in project areas. Fisheries development is one of the important sub-components under this project. In this regard, ICAR-CIFRI organized a five-days training programme on ‘Inland Fisheries Management’ for 23 officials working at the field level under the JOHAR project during 26 – 30 December, 2023. The participants were mainly from three districts of Jharkhand namely Khunti, Seraikella and Gumla. During the programme in which trainees were taught various aspects of modern and scientific fish farming like composite fish culture, biofloc technology, application of AI in fisheries, impact of water pollution on fisheries, cage culture, role of GIS in inland fisheries management,

CIFRI Cage Grow Feed and other feed related research initiatives, ornamental fish farming, fish disease management etc. In addition, two field trips were organized as part of the training program like one day visit to East Kolkata Wetland and ICAR-CIFE, Kolkata Research Centre and one day visit to a fish seed farm at Halisahar, West Bengal. During the inaugural session of the training program, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI interacted with the trainees and encouraged them to participate actively in the training programme so that they can transfer the skill and knowledge gained through the training to the ultimate beneficiaries that is the rural fish farmers.

The program has been oriented to strengthen and upgrade the knowledge and skills of the officials regarding modern fisheries practices and technologies for enhancing fish production in open waters including ponds & tanks, through on-field exposure visits and field demonstrations besides classroom sessions. The training programme was organized under the leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI and well coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Senior Scientist and Dr. Vikash Kumar, Scientist of the institute with the technical assistance of Mr. Sujit Choudhury, ACTO, Mr. Manabendra Roy, TO and Dr. Avishek Saha, TA.
