ICAR-CIFRI released one lakh fishes in the river Ganga for conservation

Depleted fish species of the Ganga river system were released into the Ganga river for its restoration and conservation by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute. About 10,00,000 (one lakh) advance size fingerlings of Indian Major Carp viz. Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal fishes were ranched in the river at Sangam Nose, Prayagraj on 6th March 6, 2024. The event was organized under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) project and it was briefed by Dr. Dharm Nath Jha, Head of the Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj. The chief guest of the occasion, Shri Umesh Chandra Ganesh Kesharvani, Mayor, Prayagraj addressed the function and explained the importance of the river Ganga for human civilization and called for keeping it clean.

Special guest on the occasion Shri Vijay Pal, Deputy Director (Fisheries) U.P. provided information on fishes of river and its importance for river as well as for fishermen. Lt. Colonel Sunil Guhani of Ganga Task Force also addressed the people and urged to save the Ganga river. Shri Rajesh Sharma, Convenor Ganga Vichar Manch, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India informed the audience about the work done by the ministry and administered pledge for keeping Ganga river clean.

The program was attended by Ganga Vichar Manch, Ganga Task Force, Ganga Prahari, the pilgrims, students, fishermen from nearby villages, fish traders, and local people living on the banks of Ganga. At the end of the program, Dr. Alam, Senior Scientist while expressing his vote of thanks, assured for successfully achieving the objectives of this project with the participation of the society. Dr. V. R. Thakur, Scientist along with his team were involved in procurement of the seed. Dr Vikas Kr. Dr Jeetendra, Dr Rayees Bhat, Dr Sandeep Kr Mishra, Dr Pargi participated in the program and addressed the gathering.
