ICAR-CIFRI organized a 3 days training programme on ‘Status, prospects and management of river, wetland and reservoir fisheries in Northeast India’ for fisheries officials of NE region

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a 3 days training programme on ‘Status, prospects and management of river, wetland and reservoir fisheries in Northeast India’ for fisheries officials of NE states during 12-14 March, 2024. The programme was sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad and organized under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head of Centre, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati. The programme was coordinated by Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist and Ms. Niti Sharma, Scientist of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and co-coordinated by Dr. SCS Das, Sr. Scientist and Dr. S. Borah, Scientist of the Centre. A total of 25 participants including fisheries department officials from different NE states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim); NGO, Morigaon and entrepreneurs, Assam attended the program; including 13 women participants. The program focused on training of fisheries officials on various aspects of open water (river, wetland and reservoir) fisheries management.
The inaugural session of the training programme was conducted on 12th March in the presence of guest Dr. USN Murty, Director, National Institute of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Pr. Scientist gave brief description about the training programme. Dr USN Murty, addressed the participants and discussed about the importance of management of open water bodies and uses of various tools from traditional methods to advance technologies in better understanding and management of fisheries in NE region.
The program followed a meticulously planned schedule that encompasses all important topics of inland fisheries management covering complete and well-versed comprehension of the subject. The programme involved two days of classroom interaction on various aspects of openwater fisheries management and one day trip to field.
On 14th March the valedictory session of the training programme was conducted in the presence of guest Dr. Alpana Das, Pr. Scientist and SIC, ICAR-CPCRI, Kahikuchi, Assam and Dr. Kanchan Saikia, Pr. Scientist and Head, RRLRRS, ICAR-NRRI, Hajo, Assam and shared insights of the importance of the programme and suggested including integrated fish farming for sustainable development of the sector. The participants from different states shared feedback, commending the training’s informative material and also valued the exposure visit to the fish farm, highlighted its significance in learning about sustainable aquaculture and natural farming techniques. The guests and Head of the centre distributed certificates and training materials to all attendees. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya and Ms. N. Sharma, coordinators of the programme gave brief report of the programme and congratulated the trainees on successful completion of the training programme and encouraged them to share the knowledge among the fishers. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. SCS Das, Sr. Scientist of the centre.
