On field demonstration cum training programme on “Fish broodstock management and breeding of carps” under NTPC Project, Farakka

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized one day On field demonstration cum Training programme on Fish broodstock management and breeding of carps under NTPC Project, Farakka on 14th May 2024. The training programme was inaugurated by Shri Ramakanta Panda, HOP, NTPC, as Chief Guest, Shri. S. Satheesh, GM, NTPC, as Guest of Honor and Dr. B.K.Das, Director. Dr. A.K.Sahoo, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI welcomed all the guest and briefed on the objectives of the training programme. The major objectives were i) to provide hands on training on the induced breeding of carp through carp pituitary and synthetic hormones ii) to provide on field demonstration on carp spawn production and iii) to provide carp seed rearing management in pen culture. Dr. B.K.Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI highlighted the importance of the proposed training programme towards livelihood improvement of the local farmers and indigenious carp conservation in the rivers. Dr. Das furthermore highlighted the role of the NTPC towards the sustainable environment management and biodiversity conservation. Shri Ramakanta Panda, HOP, NTPC, Farakka highlighted the role of NTPC towards sustainable ecosystem, climate change, and role of ICAR-CIFRI’s technological interventions for sustainable fisheries and livelihood improvement. The training programme involved both theory and practical classes by the subject experts. Dr. B.K.Das explained on the technological development in carp breeding, brood stock management and disease management in the brood stock development. Dr. Das demonstrated the injection of “Spawn pro” to the matured brood fish Labeo catla and spawn production. Dr. A.K.Sahoo explained on the Broodstock identification, and feeding. He also demonstrated the carp pituitary extraction, preservation, isolation and injection in the breeding process. Total 55 farmers from Beniyagram, Deer forest, Pallalpur and Nayansukh were participated in the training programme.An interaction session was held at the end of the program and 95% participants provided high level of satisfaction as feedback.

All the participants explained that the induced breeding demonstration was the first time in their profession. Certificates were distributed to all participated farmers by the Director, ICAR-CIFRI. The training programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K.Sahoo and the project team members under the overall guidance of Dr. B.K.Das.
