ICAR-CIFRI organized Hands on training on “Molecular tools for Aquatic Resource Management”

A hands-on training program on "Molecular tools for aquatic resource management" was organized by ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata from 27th May to 1st June, 2024 under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Convener of this training programme. Training was attended by 32 trainee participants including Assistant professor, students (UG, PG, and PhD) and researchers from Presidency University, Kolkata; Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata; Chander Nagar College, WB; ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai; Calcutta University, Kolkata; Zoological Survey of India, NRC, Dehradun; Zoological Survey of India, Chennai; University of Kalyani, Nadia, WB; College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri; College of Fisheries, Kishanganj, Bihar; College of Fisheries, Muzaffarpur, Bihar; Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Kerala and Gurudas college, Kolkata.

This training program was modulated to provide extensive laboratory research experience in molecular biology. The learning goals of this training program were hands-on experience on various laboratory techniques including the isolation, quantification, visualisation, and imaging of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Trainees were also provided with various software and analytical tools required for bioinformatic analysis of nucleic acids and proteins. Recent advancements in the field of genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics were taught to all the participants by various lectures and interactive sessions.

Dr. B.K. Das enlightened the trainees with various molecular tools and techniques used in different aspects of Inland Fishery. He also explained the application of advanced tools and techniques. He further added the importance of application of molecular tools in fish diagnosis and bioinformatics in viral disease diagnostics and management. Dr. Archana Sinha, HOD, AEB Division and co-convener of this training programme addressed the importance of this training in today’s research.

Dr. Annam Pavan Kumar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai has delivered a lecture on application of molecular tools in fish taxonomy in on-line mode to the participants. Dr Ayan Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Animal Biotechnology, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, Nadia, West Bengal, has delivered a lecture on molecular diagnostic for early detection of animal tuberculosis. Praveen Maurye, Kavita Kumari and M. Shaya Devi, Scientists of the institute and coordinators of this training programme has conducted this training program.
