National Fish Farmers’ Day, 2024 celebrated by ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati at Hajo, Kamrup (R) district, Assam

“National Fish Farmers’ Day, 2024” was celebrated by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati at Hajo, Kamrup (R) district, Assam on 10 July, 2024. The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati. Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist of the Centre acted as Organizing Secretary; Dr. Anil Kumar Yadav and Dr. Pronob Das, Senior Scientists acted as Co-organizing Secretary of the programme. The programme was attended by more than 50 participants including aquapreneurs, fish farmers, fishers of the locality along with media representatives.

Dr. A.K. Yadav welcomed the participants and media personnel’s for the programme. He explained the purpose of the day-long programme. Mr. Nitul Ch. Das, an Aquapreneur of the locality welcome the Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI and express his happiness for organizing such a field programme for them. Dr. S.K. Majhi spoke about the history and significance of National Fish Farmers’ Day. He briefly explained about the interventions of ICAR-CIFRI in the region. He promised to provide technical support to local fishers/ fish farmers. Dr. P. Das briefed about different technologies available for openwater fisheries and aquaculture sector of Assam with emphasis on emerging aquaculture practices. Dr. S. Borah explained about the significance of fish seed production technology and its role in bringing blue revolution in the country.

He also emphasized on the conservation fisheries resources for its sustainability. The representatives of local media expressed their happiness that fish production and income of fish farmers has taken an increasing trend due to interventions of ICAR-CIFRI not only in Assam but also in entire region. They urged the local fish farmers/ fishers to adopt integrated approach in aquaculture for overall development. They promised ICAR-CIFRI to provide media support for reaching the unreached. The programme ended with formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. A. K. Yadav. Farmer representative of the locality thanked ICAR-CIFRI for their support in the form scientific and technical guidance, training to the fish farmers and for providing input materials.

During the interactive session, resource persons from the Institute interacted with the participants on different aspects of aquaculture, fish seed production, water quality management, enclosure culture, culture-based fisheries, fish feed and health management, conservation fisheries resources and PMSSY programme.
