ICAR-CIFRI, in collaboration with DoF, Madhya Pradesh, conducted a two-day workshop-cum training programme on “Better health management practices in cage culture and aquaculture farms”

The state of Madhya Pradesh has vast reservoir resources with a large number of cages installed with huge fish production potential. The state is also fast progressing in pond and tank culture and requires an integrated management approach to enhance fish production in cage culture and aquaculture. Considering fish disease as a major hindrance, ICAR-CIFRI collaborated with the DoF, MP to conduct a two-day workshop on cage culture and aquaculture disease diagnosis and better management practices, under the All India Network Project on Fish Health, for capacity building of fish farmers and fishery officials of the state. Under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Dr. S. K. Manna, CCPI, All India Network Project on Fish Health, the workshop was conducted from 5-6 Sept 2024 at the Department of Fisheries, Bhopal, MP. Dr. A. K. Bera and Mr. N. Das delivered lectures on various topics of fish disease diagnosis, preventive measures, intensive aquaculture and aquaculture drug use planning etc. This workshop benefitted 31 cage culture farmers, 30 aquaculture/tank culture farmers besides 30 state fishery officers from different districts of MP who shared their valuable inputs in prioritizing different aspects of fish culture towards development of better management practices. In the two days’ discussion, various important and immediate needs were felt such as disease detection at the field levels, availability of a minimum diagnostic facility, training of fishery personnel for disease reporting and maintaining of health records of fish and water body towards developing a database for future management option.

Mr. Ravi Gajbhiye, the Director Fisheries, MP and Mr. P. C. Kol, Chief General Manager, MP Fisheries Federation graced the programme, elaborating on importance of the workshop for the betterment of fish production in the state as a whole. They also encouraged the participants and requested ICAR-CIFRI to conduct such interactive discussions and training programmes in different parts of the state to develop capacity and expertise of more number of farmers and fishery officials.
