ICAR-World Fish Collaborative Project meeting at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore

ICAR-World Fish Collaborative Project meeting (ICAR-Window 3) held at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 22nd – 24th October, 2024. Dr. Jörn Schmidt, Director for Sustainable Aquatic Food Systems, WorldFish, Malaysia; Dr. Arun Padiyar, WorldFish Lead, India, Dr. Sourabh Kumar Dubey, WorldFish, and a multidisciplinary team of scientists & scholars from ICAR-CIFRI attended the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to review the work done under the ongoing ICAR-W3 -World Fish Collaborative project and also to discuss the potential for future collaborations and explore scientific and management interventions specific to inland fisheries.

The three days meeting started with the welcome address of Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute. Dr. Das appraised the various research and developmental activities of the Institute highlighting new research initiatives, research achievements, outreach programmes, technologies and products developed, high-impact publications and infrastructure development. He has also showcased how well the institute worked under the previous phase as well as the current phase of the ICAR-WorldFish collaboration. During the technical discussion, Dr. Padiyar urged the scientists of the Institute to play a pivotal role in providing technical guidance and management plans in the context of increasing focus on inland fisheries for production enhancement and to prioritise the research activities in the context of emerging challenges.

On the second day a visit was made to the ongoing project site at Chamta Wetland, North-24-Parganas, West Bengal by the team. Harvesting of Ompok pabda from the HDPE-Pen system was made in the presence of Dr. Schmidt followed by an interaction meeting with the stakeholders. The future work plan for the project was discussed on the last day. Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Padiyar edify how to induct knowledge-sharing seasons for the capacity building of the scientists which ultimately leads to sustainable upliftment of the stakeholders and can set a model for other developing countries. The outcome of the meeting would help the Institute in shaping its research programmes and prioritizing research focus to strive for greater heights and achieve national targets. The meeting ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Das, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore.
