World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week Observed at Sundarban

On World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024, an awareness programme was organized under under the project “All India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AINP-AMR) in fisheries and livestock” focusing the theme on “Educate.Advocate.Act now” at Basanti block, Sundarbans, in collaboration with Joygopalpur Gram Vikash Kendra (JGVK).
On 21.11.2024 the event was conducted with the gracious presence of esteemed dignitaries, Dr. Purnendu Biswas, former Vice Chancellor of WBUFAS; Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Mr. Ganesh Sengupta, chairman of IGF, Denmark; Mr. Niels Bo Karlsson from Denmark. ICAR- CIFRI and JGVK intend to empower local fishery communities in the Sundarbans by promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness through this partnership. Along with AMR awareness, World Fisheries Day was observed in conjunction with this event, emphasizing the significance of safeguarding the human rights of small-scale fishing communities, eliminating illegal and unregulated fishing, and preserving sustainable fish stocks. Banners were displayed and awareness was spread amongst a huge mass of fisher women of the village household who were made aware about the issues evolving due to antimicrobial resistance globally and aware people to take necessary actions to stop this antibiotic resistance and to aware the audience about impact of AMR on fisheries, aquaculture and human health. A rally also took place consisting of school students from Vivekananda Shiksha Niketan Model High School and the women who actively partcipated in it. About 100 leaflets on the topic “Awareness on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)” in fisheries and aquaculture were distributed among the students. Dr. A. K. Bera, Principal Scientist, and Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist, delivered lectured on the global problem of antimicrobial resistance, its effects fisheries, aquaculture, and human health and precautionary measures. The programme was assisted by our project staff Dr. Palash Ghorai, YP II and Miss Anushka Das, YP-I
