Shri George Kurian, Union Minister of State interacted with the trainee officials from Odisha

Improving the production and productivity in fisheries sector of Odisha demands a comprehensive approach to address various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture. Odisha, with its vast coastline, rivers, lakes, and ponds, has significant potential for increasing fish production. The Government of Odisha is also putting its effort to increase the fish production and productivity from both the Inland and Brackish water sectors as well as to improve the livelihood of its fisher folk.

In this regard, strengthening extension services to provide training and technical expertise to fish farmers and fishermen is crucial. This also includes the capacity building of the Fishery Officials who impart the technical know-how to the farmers. Keeping this in view, a five-days training programme (DOF, Odisha sponsored) was organized at ICAR-CIFRI from 20 to 24 January, 2025 at CIFRI Head Quarter for 30 officials including 18 female officials covering 16 districts of Odisha. The training module was specially designed for the young officials namely the AFOs after assessing their training needs.

A total of sixteen classroom sessions, three practical sessions and a field exposure visit were conducted to build the capacity of the trainee officials. In the inauguration session, Dr. B.K Das, Director of CIFRI, emphasized the need for hands-on training and skill development of the young officials so that they can carry forward their knowledge and skill to the fishers to improve the livelihood of them of the respective state. After the inauguration, a laboratory visit was conducted. In the classroom session, topics like inland fisheries management, the importance of soil and water quality analysis, common fish diseases, fish disease diagnosis method, fish disease management in enclosure, pen culture, GIS application in fisheries etc. were covered. A field visit was conducted to East Kolkata wetland and an on-field practical session was also arranged there.

The officials also visited the CIFE Kolkata Centre. Moreover, as the Hon’ble Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, GoI, Mr. George Kurien was on a visit to ICAR-CIFRI during this period, the trainees got an opportunity to interact with him and discussed about various issues related to fisheries which are relevant in the current scenario. In the feedback session, 90% of the trainees expressed that they were highly satisfied and it was very effective and useful training programme for them to enrich their professional career. During the valedictory session; Dr B.K Das, Director, CIFRI congratulated all the participants on their successful training and distributed the training completion certificate. Training Programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Mr. Mitesh Ramteke with assistance from Shri Sujit Chowdhury, Shri Manabendra Roy, Dr. Avishek Saha and and Shri. Pankaj Kumar.
