CIFRI-CAGEGROW popularized among small and marginal farmers of hilly region, Meghalaya

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Regional Centre Guwahati in collaboration with the R-Bhoi Farmers’ Union (RFU), Meghalaya organized an “Awareness-cum-input distribution programme” under TSP programme of the Institute at Umbang, Umsning, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya on 30.01.2025 to popularize CIFRI CAGEGROW among tribal fish farmers of hilly region. “CIFRI CAGEGROW” is a product/ floating fish feed developed by ICAR-CIFRI for inland fisheries. The input is expected to benefit the small and marginal fish farmers of the region. The programme was organized under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. Dr. Pronob Das, Senior Scientist (Organizing Secretary), Dr. S. C. S. Das (Co-organizing Secretary) and Mr. A. Kakti, Technical (Member) coordinated the programme. The programme was conducted in presence of Shri D. Majaw, President; Shri K. Brightstar, Secretary and Shri S. K. Rynjah, Executive Member, RFU, Meghalaya. It was attended by 70 participants including fish farmers, NGO officials, and Scientists.

Shri D. Majaw welcomed the participants and dignitaries and explained the purpose of the day-long programme. He briefed about the history of collaborative work between ICAR-CIFRI and RFU, Meghalaya including successful cage culture in the Umiam reservoir for betterment of tribal fish farmers/ fishers. He thanked ICAR-CIFRI for their continuous technical and input support for development of fisheries in hilly region. He also requested ICAR-CIFRI for development of inland fisheries in Nongmihir reservoir located in Umsning, Ri-Bhoi District for increasing livelihood and income of fishers under RFU. The different products and technologies developed by the Institute were discussed by Dr. Pronob Das for benefits of farmers of the region. He also briefed about scientific merits and usage of CIFRI CAGEGROW floating feed for enhancing rural economy.

Dr. S.C.S Das briefly explained about hill fish farming techniques for enhanced fish production for the benefit of local fish famers of the region. Shri A. Kakati explained about relevance of feed and feeding for scientific fish production. On behalf of the farming community, Ms. Banri L. Nongbri requested ICAR-CIFRI for continuing input support (feed, seed, boat, life jacket for reservoir fishers, etc.) and technical guidance for the benefits of fish farmers. She also highlighted the success of cage culture in Umiam reservoir trial by ICAR-CIFRI with participation of fisherwomen. Shri K. Brightstar, in his address glorifies the success of collaborative work between the two organizations. He stated that CIFRI CAGEGROW feed previously distributed by ICAR-CIFRI giving encouraging results benefiting small and marginal fish farmers.
Dr. P. Das, Dr. S. C. S. Das and Shri A. Kakati also interacted with the farmers on different aspects of fisheries. On the occasion, a total of 5000 kg CIFRI CAGEGROW floating feed was distributed among 50 selected tribal fish farmers’ families of the locality for farm demonstration. The programme ended with formal vote of thanks proposed by Shri S. K. Rynjah.
