ICAR-CIFRI inaugurates capacity building program on “Cage culture: Good management Practices” for DoF officials, Government of Maharashtra for sustainable cage culture development in reservoirs

ICAR-CIFRI has launched a five-day training program on “Cage Culture: Good Management Practices” for officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra. Scheduled from February 24 to 28, 2025. The program aims to enhance the technical expertise of DoF officials, equipping them with best management practices to promote sustainable cage culture development in reservoirs and boost fisheries production. The training is sponsored by the State Fisheries Department, Maharashtra.

The program was inaugurated on February 24, 2025, by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, who emphasized the critical role of capacity-building in fisheries management. He encouraged participating officials to apply the acquired knowledge to ensure sustainable livelihoods, optimize production, and maximize profitability in the cage culture sector. He also highlighted the importance of bridging knowledge gaps and fostering experience-sharing between researchers and state officials.
Dr. Armaan Muzaddadi, Head, Open Water Aquaculture Production Management Division, welcomed the participants and expressed hope that the training would empower them to support and educate cage farmers, thereby contributing to the scientific and sustainable growth of the cage aquaculture sector.

Shri Vijay Shikhare, Regional Fisheries Commissioner, Government of Maharashtra, Pune Division, expressed the department’s willingness to collaborate with ICAR-CIFRI as a technical partner to ensure the scientific and sustainable development of cage culture in Maharashtra.

The training covers a comprehensive range of topics, including overview of the cage culture sector, cage design and construction suitable for open waters, sediment and water chemistry, routine management, biotic communities and their significance, diversified species for profitability and adoptability, fish feed formulation and feeding management, disease control and health management, economic evaluation of cage culture operations, impact assessment, automation and the use of AI for farm monitoring and management etc. In addition to theoretical sessions, participants will engage in field visits to gain practical exposure to cage culture operations and management practices.

The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. A.K. Das, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI. The training program is being organized and convened under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, as Course Convener with Dr. Armaan Muzaddadi, Head, Open Water Aquaculture Production Management Division, as Course Director and Dr. A.K. Das, Principal Scientist, Dr. D. K Meena, Sr. Scientist, Dr. Gunjan Karnatak, Sr. Scientist, Dr. Raju Baitha, Sr. Scientist and Dr. Rahul, Scientist as Course Coordinators.
