Empowering Rural Women Through Small-Scale Fisheries in South 24 Parganas
25th February, 2025
A significant step toward rural economic empowerment, ICAR-CIFRI has been promoting fish culture in backyard ponds across South 24 Parganas for the past 12 years. Recognizing that nearly every private household in these villages has a pond used for both drinking water and fish farming, the initiative aims to enhance livelihoods by boosting fish production and ensuring nutritional security through protein supplements. The backyard pond fish culture not only enhances household incomes but also ensures better nutritional security through protein-rich fish consumption. In order to strengthen the rural economy, ICAR-CIFRI has encouraged fishermen to start small-scale inland fisheries in their backyard rain-fed water bodies.
A mass awareness programme was organised by the Institute in collaboration with Sasya Shyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Narendrapur on 25 February 2025.
