Young Minds were inspired on National Science Day 2025 for fostering innovation & Responsible Hobbies

The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore in collaboration with the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) Regional Chapter, Kolkata successfully celebrated National Science Day 2025 with great enthusiasm . This year, the event was organized keeping focus on the theme "Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat." By fostering an interest in ornamental fish culture and home aquariums, the initiative of the institute was aimed to enhance awareness on aquatic biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and responsible pet keeping. More than 100 Students with teachers from Army Public School,Barrackpore actively participated in the event, making it a more inclusive and engaging platform for the young learners.
National Science Day, celebrated annually on February 28, marks the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist C.V. Raman. This groundbreaking discovery revolutionized the field of optics and earned Raman the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Indian scientist to receive this prestigious honor. The day serves as a reminder of the significance of scientific research and its impact on technological and societal advancements. Events like these play a crucial role in igniting scientific temper among the youth by encouraging them to question, explore, and innovate. By celebrating National Science Day, institutions like ICAR-CIFRI contribute to building a culture of curiosity and knowledge, ensuring a brighter future for scientific progress in the country.
The event featured a series of interactive activities designed to inspire students towards scientific curiosity and responsible hobbies. Dr. Archana Sinha, Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. Suman Kumari shed light on the importance of sustainable fisheries, life of different scientists, aquarium keeping and its role in reducing excessive mobile usage among youth. Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI addressed the children on the occasion of National Science Day. A hands-on workshop on fish handling enabled students to learn the basics of setting up an aquarium, maintaining water quality, and selecting fish species. The event also included a student interaction session where participants from Army Public School shared their views on how adopting engaging hobbies can help in reducing unnecessary screen time. The initiative encouraged young minds to replace mobile surfing with meaningful hobbies, ultimately contributing to their cognitive development and societal well-being. Each student received a vibrant set of ornamental fish, sparking a passion for nature-inspired hobbies. The overwhelming response from participants has encouraged CIFRI, Barrackpore and NAAS Regional Chapter, Kolkata, to continue similar outreach programs in the future. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, I/C E & T Cell and Dr. Suman Kumari, Senior Scientist under the guidance of Dr. B.K Das,Director ,CIFRI.
