Awareness- cum- input distribution program to popularize ornamental fisheries in the Schools of Tripura

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) in collaboration with Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of Tripura organized an awareness cum-input distribution program on 17th April, 2025 at the office complex of the Tripura Fisheries Development Board, Collegetilla, Agartala, West Tripura. The main objective of the programme was to create awareness among different schools of Tripura on ornamental fish keeping in aquariums. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Biswajit Shil, Hon’ble Sabhadipathi, West Tripura Zilla Parishad, Agartala.

The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, ARS, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Shri S. Das, IAS, Director of Fisheries, Government of Tripura and Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati. Dr. B. K. Das, in his inaugural addressed stated that ICAR-CIFRI is providing 50 aquariums with stand and other inputs (ornamental fishes, feed, aerator, and accessories) to the 50 schools of Tripura under the NEH programme of the institute to popularise aquarium fish keeping among the people of Tripura. He also emphasized on the need to adopt scientific management of aquariums by schools authorities and others officials. Shri S. Das, thanked ICAR-CIFRI for taking unique initiatives to popularize aquarium fish keeping in the different schools of Tripura. He further assured that there would be sincere cooperation from the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura in the endeavour of ICAR-CIFRI for the development of fisheries sector in Tripura.

In opening remarks, Dr. S. K. Majhi outlined the ongoing research activities of the ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati emphasising on ornamental fisheries in the north-eastern region of India. Dr. S. Bhattacharya, Project Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore spoke on the technical aspects on ornamental fish culture and aquarium management. In the programme importance of aquarium keeping in the schools were also highlighted by Shri. N.G. Noatia, Dy. Director of Fisheries, West Tripura; Shri A. Debbarma, Joint Director of Fisheries, Government of Tripura.
On this occasion, as an initiative, a total of 14 aquariums along with stand and inputs (ornamental fishes, feed, aerator, and accessories) were distributed among 14 schools in the two districts (West Tripura and Sepahijala) of Tripura. Rest of the aquariums (36 no.) with other accessories will be distributed by the DoF officials in the different schools of other 6 districts with the active collaboration with the ICAR-CIFRI.

The programme aims to develop interest among students and teachers in aquarium keeping and ornamental fish culture. In the technical session, there was a demonstration on the installation of aquariums, followed by an interaction with the teachers of schools, fish famers, and DoF officials conducted by Dr. B. K. Das, and others. The day-long programme was coordinated by Shri S. Debbarma, Fishery Development Officer; Shri H. Sarkar, Supdt. of Fisheries, and Shri R. Debbarma, Executive Officer, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura. A total of 100 participants including school teachers, fish farmers, fisheries officials, and other dignitaries participated in the programme. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. S. C. S. Das, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, RC, Guwahati.
