Vulnerability assessment of Kayamkulam fishers, Kerala

Multi-dimensional vulnerabilities of inland fishers of Kayamkulam estuary was assessed at Choola theruvu , Kayamkulam on 16.10.25. The programme was conducted under the auspices of the project titled 'Fishery resource assessment and ecological monitoring of Kayamkulam Estuary, Kerala for sustainability'.

Nearly 30 inland fishermen participated in the programme led by Dr. Preetha Panickar (PI of the project and Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, Bengaluru). The program was inaugurated by Smt. Anu Raj (Fisheries Extension officer, Alappuzha) and presided over by Nirmala Roy (Ward Member, Arattu Panchayat, Kayamkulam).

Dr. Preetha explained the relevance of this programme and emphasised the need of assessment of ecosystem vulnerability of estuary along with the socio-economic vulnerability faced by inland fishers of Kayamkulam estuary at the back drop of recent anthropogenic developments and climate change. Scientists of ICAR- CIFRI Kochi Research station, Dr. Thankam T Paul and Mrs. Tanuja Abdulla delivered lectures in the meeting. 0fficials of State Fisheries Department, Mr. Arun Das, Mrs. Asha Raj and Mrs. Mini Dineshan participated in the meeting.
