Regional Centre of ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore conducted a Demonstration program for promoting the cage culture of endemic fishes at Banasurasagar reservoir, Kerala under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) program

ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Bangalore conducted a Demonstration program for promoting the endemic fish through cage culture in Banasurasagar reservoir on 30 October 2025. About 50 tribal fishers, members of Banasurasagar ST-SC Fishermen Co-operative Society attended the program. The program was conducted successfully under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and the support of Dr. L. N. Murthy, Principal Scientist & Head, Regional Centre, to sensitize fishermen on the importance of inclusion of endemic fish in cage culture for species diversification.
On this occasion, ICAR-CIFRI has stocked fingerlings of Labeo kontius, L. fimbriatus, and Horabagrus brachysoma in cages provided by Aquaculture Development Authority, Kerala (ADAK). Fish feed was also distributed to the fishermen for cage culture of these endemic species. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist, Regional Centre, gave the presidential remarks and detailed on the importance of promoting endemic fishes of Kerala. Mr. Anil, Assistant Engineer, from Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Kerala addressed the participants and spoke on various regulations possibilities on fishing in Banasurasagar to ensure livelihood of the tribal fishermen, dam safety and development of tourism. Dr. Jesna P. K., Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI elaborated on cage culture practices.
Mr. Sagar Das, Cage Technical Manager, ADAK, Mr. Noufal, Fisheries Promoter, Fisheries Department, Govt. of Kerala attended the program. The officer-bearers of the co-operative society Mr. Sandeep K. N. (Secretary) and Mr. Mohan Das A. K. (President) attended the program. The program was co-ordinated by Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Dr. Jesna P. K., and co-coordinated by Dr. Ramya V. L., and Dr. SibinaMol S.
