Non-residential training programme on ‘Pen farming for production and livelihood enhancement in floodplain wetlands’ held at Lakhanabandha beel, Nagaon, Assam during 24-26 November, 2021

A non-residential on-field training programme on ‘Pen farming for production and livelihood enhancement in floodplain wetlands’ was organized by ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati during November 24-26, 2021 at Lakhanabandha beel, Nagaon, Assam. The programme was sponsored by the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad. A total of 58 participants including officials from Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., Beel Development and Management Committee members, fishers and fish farmers participated in the programme. The training programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Senior Scientist and Simanku Borah, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. Dr. S. Borah welcomed the participants and briefly explained the background and purpose of the training programme. During the 3-days on-field training programme several aspects of pen culture and beel fisheries management viz., fisheries enhancement options in floodplain wetlands, pen culture in floodplain wetlands, soil and water quality management for pen culture, feeding and feed management in pens, techno-economic feasibility of pen culture etc. were covered. Lectures were delivered by Dr. D. Debnath, Dr. Sona Yengkokpam (Senior Scientists), Mr. A.K. Yadav, Dr. S. Borah and Ms. Niti Sharma (Scientists) of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. A one-day field visit to 47-Morakolong beel, Morigaon district of Assam was organized for practical exposure of fishers to pen culture in beels.
The training programme was successfully organized under the dynamic leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, with guidance and support from Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati. Fishers and lessee of Lakhanabandha beel expressed their sincere gratitude to Director, ICAR-CIFRI for the initiative.
