ICAR-CIFRI celebrated World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, 2021
The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) was celebrated with an aim to increase awareness on global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best management practices among the fish farmers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections in fish and shellfishes particularly for aquaculture farmers during 18th-24th Nov, 2021. The programme was jointly celebrated with ICAR-programme on National Campaign on Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish at different places covering Farakka, West Bengal, Moyna, S-24 PGS, West Bengal and different Ghats (Srirampore and Sheraupouli) in river Ganga. With a slogan by WHO “Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance”, info-graphics, and leaflets on AMR were being distributed to more than 1000 fishermen, students of schools and colleges and general public. A mass awareness was also conducted at Moyna, Purba Midnapore, West Bengal in collaboration with Moyna Ramakrishnayan Association. More than 500 participants including students, teachers and local fish farmers were present. Dr. B. K. At Moyna, Dr. B.K.Das, and Dr. A.K.Bera, Principal Scientist provided a talk on AMR in Fisheries and Aquaculture in FM 92.1 radio channel to reach around 3.0 lakh residents of that area. A farmers-scientist interaction was organized at Farakka, West Bengal to create awareness on responsible use of antibiotics, development of antimicrobial resistance and its impact on public health. Nearly 150 to 200 fishermen, youth, women, and students participated. The programme has been highlighted by many local news papers and news channels of West Bengal. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das Director and under co-ordinations of Drs. A. K. Sahoo, A.K.Bera and D.K.Meena at different places in West Bengal covering wider stakeholders.
