Tribal fishers of Purulia trained on “ Fisheries development in Check Dams”
A training programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-
CIFRI for the tribal fishers of Chakkadam, Purulia, West Bengal on “Fisheries development in
Check Dam” from 20-09-2018 to 24-09-2018 under Tribal Subplan programme (TSP). A total
of 26 participants (tribal fishers) including 6 women were actively participated in the training
programme. The tribal fishers explained their present pattern of fisheries practices and their
expectation from the training programme on the first day of the training. The training module
was prepared after assessing their need. The process of fisheries development in Check dam was
explained to them. Both theory, practical and field exposure was provided to the tribal fishers of
Purulia. The fishers were trained on the aspects of Fisheries enhancement in Check Dams. The
fishers were advised on the size of the seed to be stocked, the size of fish to catch and not to
catch; the type of fishing practice to be followed; the management norms; water quality
management etc. The fishers were also trained on the rearing of the fish seed to be stocked in the
check dam in enclosures and small ponds. Benefit of enclosure culture was also explained to the
participants. They were also exposed on the prospectus of Ornamental fisheries in hapas in check
dam or in small ponds in the periphery. The participants were also provided with a training
manual for the further reference by the tribal fishers. The training programe was coordinated by
Dr. P. K. Parida, Dr. A. Roy, Mr. C. N. Mukherjee and Mr. Suvendu Mandal of ICAR-CIFRI.
The hand holding support by Mr. Sujit Choudhury, Ms. Supriti Bayen, Ms. Bandana, Ms. Shreya
of ICAR-CIFRI for successful conduction of the programme is highly acknowledged.
