World Fisheries Day celebrated at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore to sensitize fishers on livelihood and nutritional security
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared 21 st November as the World Fisheries
Day. On this purpose, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute celebrated the
World Fisheries day on November 20, 2018. To make this day memorable the institute
arranged for two events on the day; “Ranching programme at Ganga river and conservation
of fish biodiversity” and “Nutrition and livelihood security of fishermen by Small Indigenous
Fish (SIF) culture and conservation”. Shri Pradeep Bagela ji, Vice Chairman of Nehru Yuva
Kendra, Shri Navin Nayek ji, Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra, and Ms. Madhabi Agarwal,
Governing Body Member, Nehru Yuva Kendra were present as special guests for the
programme. The day started with ranching programme under the “Namami Gange” project
of the Government of India in which The honourable director of the institute, Dr. B .K. Das
released 1.5 lakhs of fish seeds of Indian major carp in the Ganga river. After this, the main
programme was inaugurated in the institute auditorium by the director of the institute and
the guests of honour. The programme was aimed at building awareness among the
fishermen. A interaction session was arranged in which the director of the institute and the
special guests of the event interacted with the fishermen about fish conservation and
nutritional value of SIFs. Shri Pradip Bagela inspired the fishermen and rural youth, present
in the programme to take up farming as entrepreneurial activity in the coming days. Hapas
were distributed among the fisherwomen of Sundarbans to promote SIF culture and
conservation for nutritional security. The institute also arranged for special discussion
session on the occasion of “Cooperative Week” which started from 14 th November. On this
event the fishermen from the “Akaipur Darbasini Fishermen’s Society” and “Hingalgunj
Agricultural society” were present and shared their experiences regarding the importance of
cooperatives on fisheries. The day witnessed the presence of around 130 fishermen from
Sunderban, North 24 Paraganas, Hawrah and Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Parallelly, NFDB
sponsored Skill Development Programme for fishermen and training for rural youth in
collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra are also taking place in the institute. The institute
took a special step toward Government of India’s initiative on “Doubling Farmers’ Income”
through celebration of this event.
