Women in Agriculture Day celebrated at IACR-CIFRI, Barrackpore
Women constitute a significant portion of the farming community in India with noteworthy
contribution in the agriculture sector of the country. To recognize and acknowledge their role
and importance in Indian agriculture, 4 th December is celebrated as the ‘Women in Agriculture
Day’ across all ICAR institutes. ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute took active
initiative in this great endeavor and observed the day at its head quarter at Barrackpore
through a brain storming session. . Five eminent women scientists and educationists also
graced the event with their presentations on women in agriculture and allied sectors in present
context .Dr. K. C. Dora, Former Dean of WBUA&FS was also present in the event. More
than fourty farm women from various Self Help Groups participated in the programme. Prof.
Branjul Bhattacharyya, Head of the Statistics Dept., BCKV addressed the importance of
Women in agriculture in her speech. Prof. Suhrita Chokrobarty from BCKV spoke on role of
women in Floriculture and how it could be a viable livelihood option for them. Prof. Kalyani
Ray, Head of Gynecology and Obstetrics Dept., WBUA&FS emphasized on the role of
women in Livestock production in her presentation. Dr. Lopamudra Haldar, Associate
Professor, WBUA&FS gave her presentation on role of women in dairying and Dr. Archana
Sinha, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI spoke on status of women in Fisheries. Dr. Dr. B. K.
Das, honourable director of the institute addressed the participants and interacted with them.
He categorically highlighted on the role that women play in agriculture and allied sector of the
country. A lecture compendium on ‘ Women in Agriculture and Allied Sectors’ was released
on that occasion in that compendium all the write-ups are contributed by women scientists and
educationalists. The day was followed by an interactive session between the experts and the
farm women present in the programme.
