A 7-days training programme for the farmers of Sheikhpura district of Bihar was conducted at ICAR- CIFRI, Barrackpore from 5th to 11th January 2019. A total of 31 fishers took part in the programme. While inaugurating the programme, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI emphasized on the needs of skill development of the farmers on various facets of inland fisheries management for ensuring their livelihood through enhanced production and income generating capabilities. The training module was framed after interacting with the farmers and the feedback received from the previous batches, which was refined accordingly. In Sheikhpura district, there are plenty of water resources which could fetch livelihood of the farmers if utilized properly. So, there is ample scope of livelihood improvement through development of inland fisheries in this district. In this training programme, ICAR-CIFRI aimed at bridging up knowledge, skill and attitude gap of the farmers towards inland fisheries management. The programme contained sessions on fish feed management, disease management, soil and water chemistry, induced breeding, composite fish farming, ornamental fishery, cage culture, economic valuation of fish etc. followed by a feedback from the trainees at the end of the programme. The programme has been oriented to strengthen the practical skills of the farmers for enhancing the fish production in open waters including ponds & tanks, through on-field exposure visits and field demonstrations besides class room sessions. The validactory session was graced by Dr. J K Jena, Honourable DDG (Fishery Science), ICAR. Dr. Jena urged the farmers not to convert productive crop fields in constructing ponds, rather emphasis needs to be given on rejuvenation ofunder-utilized ponds including use of waste fallow land for pisciculture. He advised the trainee farmers to utilize the knowledge gained in the training period as to earn their livelihood in a sustained manner. He distributed the certificates to the trainees for their successful completion of the training and wished that in future also they could take part in need-based training programmes at ICAR- CIFRI and other such Institutions. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI, welcomed DDG in the program and remarked that the wise words of DDG would have lasting impact to the trainees in their future endeavours.
