CIFRI Awards
A 7-days orientation training program on Inland Fisheries Management for the B.Sc (Fisheries & Farm Management) students (44 nos) of Ramnagar College, Purba Midnapore, West Bengal held at CIFRI HQ, Barrackpore during 12-18 Feb, 2019. Inaugurating the program, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI called upon the students to make them apprised of the modern interventions and technology adoptions for this vibrant sector looking towards doubling farmers’ income in the near future. Proper utilization of the very valued time during the training periods would be of immense help in re-shaping their future for which they have opted the subject, he urged. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, HoD, FREM Division and Dr. U. K. Sarkar, HoD, RWF Division of the Institute during their interactive sessions with the students, projected the importance of nutritional values of small indigenous fish species (SIFS) required for human health and the fish biodiversity which is at declining spree in our riverine and other inland open water fisheries resources respectively. The training schedule was made compact with both in-house and field-exposure visits to acquaint them at best about the inland open water fisheries resources as well as fisheries enhancement in such ecosystems applying eco- orienting approach with the utmost involvement of modern technological tools and techniques to make the production sustainable without compromising with the biotic integrity. The students were made aware of the biotechnology, nano-technology, RAS system, enclosure culture, GIS application for delineating inland water resources, besides sediment-water analysis, identification of biotic communities including disease symptoms, ornamental fish breeding protocol, ecology of rivers, reservoirs and floodplain wetlands including their fisheries enhancement protocols being adopted at the Institute. They were exposed to ornamental live fish market, Kolkata, sewage fed fisheries, ecological functioning of East Kolkata Wetlands (EKWs) including some hatcheries of progressive farmers of Naihati and surroundings including beels Assignments were given to them group-wise on different facets of inland open water fisheries sector. Feedback session was meticulously done noticing their urges in learning more on these aspects of inland fisheries.
