NFDB sponsored Skill Development Programme on Inland fisheries Development at CIFRI

CIFRI Kochi Centre organised NFDB sponsored Skill Development Programme from Feb 20 th to
22 nd 2019 at CMFRI campus for upcoming fishers for developing their skills in augmenting fish
production and to enhance their livelihood income. The programme was attended by 50 fishers
from various arenas in fish production such as land based fish producers, small scale fishers and
entrepreneurs. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. V. V.Sugunan, Former Director, ICAR-
CIFRI and ADG (Inland Fisheries) in the forenoon of 20th February 2019. He emphasized the
need for diversification in inland fisheries and aquaculture for augmenting fish production in a
scenario of stagnancy in marine fisheries sector without compromising fishery diversity of the
state. Dr. Rani Palaniswamy, Officer- in –charge, CIFRI Kochi Centre informed the fishers that
CIFRI offers innovative aquaculture technologies for income generation from Kerala inland
waters. The programme included sessions on CIFRI technologies involving pen and cage culture
systems, land based fish production systems, government sponsored schemes and subsidies and
financial assistances from banks.
Dr. Deepa Sudheesan and Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul took sessions on CIFRI technologies and
land based fish production systems respectively and stressed on various techniques and
technologies for enhancing inland fish production. The fishers were given a chance to have a
field level demonstration of cages at Piravam, Kottayam district. Fishers were provided adequate
training in various modern technologies and they have responded positively to adopt technology
that is suitable for them. The programme was supported by Mr. S. Manoharan, CTO, Mrs. Usha
Unnithan, Technical Officer and other supporting staffs.
