Up-scaling knowledge and skill of the fishers of Sundarban on Canal Fisheries
A skill development program was organized for 40 farmers of Sundarbans at ICAR-Central Inland
Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 4-6 February 2019 on “Canal Fisheries Development for
Income Generation of Fishers”. The program is sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board,
Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution Scheme. The training was organized based on the
need of farmers as Sundarbans has vast canal resources, which has tremendous potential for the fisheries
development. The fishers were trained on various aspects of canal fisheries which include fish culture
practices, suitable species selection, water and soil quality management, importance of natural fish food
organisms etc. Hands on training on water and soil quality analysis and exposure visit to canals of
Sundarbans is also arranged for the trainees. The inauguration session of the programme was chaired by
Dr. Y. S. Yadava , Director , Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO).
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI interacted with the trainees and asked fishers to promote canal
fisheries in Sundarbans area for the sustainable utilization of canal resources. The coordinators of the
training programmes Mr. Pranab Gogoi, Mr. Mitesh H. Ramteke and Mr. Tasso Tayung.
