Training-cum-awareness programme on “Livelihood improvement
through fisheries” in Baksa district, Assam on 4 th May, 2019 under TSP
A training-cum-awareness programme on “Livelihood improvement through fisheries” was
organized by ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with Department of
Fisheries, Govt. of Assam for tribal fishers of Baksa district at Mushalpur, Baksa, Assam on
4 th May, 2019 under TSP of the Institute. The training-cum-awareness programme was
organized under the overall guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore;
Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and Dr. P. K. Parida,
Coordinator, TSP programme, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore with the objective of improving
livelihood of tribal fishers of Baksa through fisheries. During the programme, CIFRI
CageGrow Feed was also distributed among the tribal fishers in an effort to encourage them
to take up scientific fish farming.
The meeting was presided over by Shri Bipul Khataniar, District Fishery Development
Officer, Baksa. He welcomed all the invitees and the participants. He informed that tribal
fishers of Baksa district (belonging to Boro tribe) are gradually taking up scientific fish
farming. Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional centre, Guwahati
discussed on importance of fish feeds in fisheries and shared technical knowledge on proper
feeding frequency, feed ration and feeding methods to be followed in fish culture for
improved fish production. Dr. Pronob Das, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional centre,
Guwahati, in his lecture urged the fishers to adopt fish farming as a means of livelihood or
income generation and shared his knowledge on fish health management. Shri Simanku
Borah, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional centre, Guwahati explained the background and
objective of the programme, besides sharing experiences and knowledge on scientific fish
farming even in derelict waterbodies. Shri Amulya Kakati, STA, ICAR-CIFRI Regional
Centre, Guwahati urged the farmers to pay a visit to their farms every morning so that he
knows the condition of the stocked fish. He also emphasized benefits of fish eating for
children, pregnant women and adults.
A total of 66 no. of tribal fishers attended the training programme and interacted with
scientists of ICAR-CIFRI and officials of Department of Fisheries, Assam. The meeting was
also attended by Shri Abhijit Choudhury, Fishery Development Officer, Baksa and officials
from Office of the District Fishery Development Officer, Baksa.
