Awareness programme on fisheries development in Hill region
ICAR-CIFRI has conducted two awareness programmes for the fisheries development in
hill region in Mirik, Darjeeling, West Bengal during 11 th and 12 th May 2019. In each programme
more than 200 fishers attended the programme and a total 400 fishers were sensitized on the
different aspects of fisheries livelihoods for the hill region. Villagers from six villages around
Manju tea estate, Mirik ( Sauri Basti, Manju Dargaon, Desitar, Sadu Gaon, Bairi gaon and
Letcha Villa) were attended the programme. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI addressed the
gathering and sensitized them on the different possibilities of fisheries livelihoods in this region.
He also shared the ICAR-CIFRI activities under SCSP and TSP for the livelihoods development
with the fishers, youth and the women. The fishers shared their problem of small land holding,
non availability of fish seed and the disease problem with Director, ICAR-CIFRI. Director,
ICAR-CIFRI explained them in detail the possibilities of species to be cultured in the small land
holding and colder water area; the seed availability in the local area and the linkages and also
explained the probable measures to be taken during disease occurrence. He also visited the
farmers’ field and advised the farmers for better farming. On 2 nd day more focus was given on
Ornamental fish farming and conservation of local ornamental fishes available. A detailed
presentation was made by Dr. P. K. Parida on scope of ornamental fisheries in Hill region. After
the presentation the farmers clarified their doubts and interacted with Director, ICAR-CIFRI on
the possibilities of ornamental fish farming in the small land holding in their region. The
progarmme was conducted in the community hall, Manju tea estate and the officials of Manju tea
estate also attended the programme. The programme was conducted in coordination with a local
NGO, “Sunderban Dreams”.
