ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ on 5 th December, 2017 in a grand way to generate awareness among the farmers on critical Importance of soil in our life respectively. Dr. H. S. Sen, Former Director of ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackore, and an eminent Soil Scientist chaired the programme as Chief Guest.

World Soil day was celebrated with this years’ theme ‘Caring for the Planet Starts from the Ground’. The inaugural programme of this event was started with the welcome address of Dr. S.K Samanta, Principal Scientist, CIFRI. Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI in his address reiterated the importance of soil as a basis of food and nutritional security to the vast community of Indian people. The Chief Guest Dr. Sen made a power point presentation highlighting soil as the main resource for sustainable agricultural production and the problems associated with maintenance of soil fertility and soil health. He emphassized that we have to at least double the production by 2030 to maintain a balance between demand and supply and while doing so, we have to strive hard in maintaining the soil health.

Fifty farmers from Barasat Block –I attended the programme.On this occasion, a total of 25 Soil Health Cards were distributed to the farmers from Mera Gaon Mera Gourav (MGMG) adopted villages under CIFRI.

Dr. S. Samanta, Dr. A.K Das, Dr. S.K Nag, Dr. S.K Das, Dr. H. Chowdhury, Dr. D. Sarkar, Shri Vikash Kumar coordinated the programme and it was ended up with vote of thanks delivered by Dr. S.K Nag, Pincipal Scientist,CIFRI.
