ICAR-CIFRI Helping Fishers in Doubling Their Income
The ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata has organised two days “Fish Harvest Mela” at
Kararia and Sirsa maun (freshwater wetlands) of Purvi Champaran District of Bihar during
14 th to 15 th June 2019. The mela was inaugurated by Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Honourable
Former Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, and Member of Parliament
(Loksabha) Purvi Champaran. Shri Singh in his address said that the ongoing NFDB funded
programme had benefitted 800-900 fisher’s family of five wetlands of Purvi Champaran
District in doubling their income through scientific interventions made by ICAR-CIFRI.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, briefed about the technological interventions of culture based
Ffisheries made by ICAR-CIFRI in his welcome address. He stressed that the management
interventions made to get double-triple fish yield, viz. 180 kg/ha/yr to approximately 675
kg/ha/yr in Kararia maun; 190 kg/ha/yr to 320 kg/ha/yr in Sirsa maun; 70 kg/ha/yr to 140
kg/ha/yr in Rulhi maun and 60 kg/ha/yr to 120 kg/ha/yr in Majharia maun. Additionally,
fishers has also been benefited in getting increase in their fishing days, viz. 44 days to 151
days in Kararia maun; 32 days to 63 days in Sirsa maun; 35 days to 62 days in Rulhi maun
and 28 days to 60 days in Majharia maun.
The programme “Wetland Fisheries Development Projects of Bihar under Central Sector
Scheme (CSS) Blue Revolution” have been successfully demonstrated the ICAR-CIFRI
technological intervention in optimum exploitation of under exploited wetlands of Bihar in
respect of fish yield. The local fishers have also perceived that such scheme had not only
been able to reduce the unemployment, but also helped in reversal of youth migration in
search of jobs. More than 250 fishers participated in this programme.
