CIFRI Awards
A 4-days training programme on “Wetland Fisheries Management for Livelihood improvement” was inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on June 24, 2019 at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarter, Barrackpore for the farmers of Nadia and North 24 Paraganas districts of West Bengal. Both of these districts have plenty of wetlands with unexplored potential for fishery development. Around 90 per cent of fishers in this region belong to scheduled castes, therefore, a high need was felt to empower and mobilize this marginalized section of society towards livelihood improvement through scientific fishery practices. A total of 21 fishers participated in the programme. In this training programme, ICAR-CIFRI aimed at bridging-up the gap in knowledge, skill and attitude of the farmers towards wetland fisheries management. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI who addressed the trainees and emphasized on the need of skill development of the fish farmers on various facets of wetland fisheries management to eradicate poverty and malnutrition. He also spoke about the entrepreneurial opportunities in fisheries which can be harnessed with better marketing and business skills. He also interacted with the trainees and asked them to put their learning into practice and to disseminate the knowledge gathered from the training sessions among fellow farmers after going back to their native place. Trainees were motivated to work in group to build resilience and have better market and institutional linkage which in turn would augment their income. The programme consists of three days of lecture along with hands on training sessions and one day of field exposure visit. The training programme contains sessions on various aspects of wetland fisheries management which include water and soil chemistry, pen culture, fish health management, feed and feed management, natural fish food organisms, nursery management, wetland management etc. The training programme also contains separate session for visit to the Institute laboratories, Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and Fisher-Scientist interaction. The programme is coordinated by Dr. Piyashi DebRoy and Ms. Sukanya Som, Scientists, ICAR-CIFRI.
