Meeting with NHPC officials on Improvement of Fish Pass
A meeting on “possible ways towards improving fish passage of the Teesta Low Dam project (TLDP)- III and TLDP IV situated on river Teesta” was organized with NHPC officials at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore on 27th June, 2019. The meeting was chaired by Dr. B.K.Das, Director and Principal Investigator of the ongoing project on Fish pass. Dr. Das highlighted the importance of fish passages for improving the migratory fish population in the up-stream of Dam/barrages. Dr. Das further underlined the importance of attractant flows requirement for the fish species. Dr. A.K.Sahoo, Sr. Scientist explained the present status of the fish passages of the TLDP III and TLDP IV and their efficacy for the available migratory fish species. Dr. Sahoo highlighted the results of the tagging experiment that was carried out as a part of the study. Based on the results, NHPC officials particularly with the back ground of Civil Engineering and Environment seek the possible ways towards improving the existing fish passages at both TLDP III and TLDP IV. Shri Mahesh Kumar, General Manager, Civil Engineering (Design), NHPC expressed views on the Design of fish passages and released the importance of fish behavior for designing the same. Dr. S. K. Bajpayee, DGM (Env.), NHPC recognized the role of Fish pass and its importance on river connectivity. The meeting was concluded with finding the possible ways, such as provision of natural fish habitat along the passages, behavioral based fish passage design and improved methodologies for the fish migration study with multidisciplinary approach would provide a better ecosystem for migratory fish species in river.
