Training of Trainers programme inaugurated at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute is organizing a five-day long NFDB sponsored ToT (Training of Trainers) programme on ‘Enclosure Culture (Cage and Pen) for Inland Fisheries Management’ during 2nd to 6th July, 2019. The ToT programme designed with objectives for developing knowledge and skills on recent technologies in enclosure culture like cage and pen for enhancing fish production from Inland open waters, being organized under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, while inaugurating the programme today at ICAR-CIFRI Head Quarters at Barrackpore emphasized the role of CIFRI, line department and fishers cooperatives in production enhancement through skill development and technological intervention. Dr. M. A. Hassan, Coordinator, welcomed the gathering and briefed about the NFDB sponsored ToT programmes and its objectives. Dr. U. K. Sarkar, HoD, Reservoir and Wetland Division, ICAR-CIFRI, in his brief address, motivated trainees through sharing few case studies of adoption of enclosure culture in reservoirs and wetlands in different parts of India and their success stories. In the inaugural session, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI interacted with the participants and underlined the importance of strengthening the primary fishermen cooperatives for promoting enclosure culture in open waters such as reservoirs and wetlands. He also stressed upon the importance of cage culture for utilizing the untapped potential of the reservoirs and pen culture for improving productions from wetlands, for increasing fish production and doubling the fishers’ income. The ToT participants represented states of West Bengal, Odisha, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, and consisted of state department officials, staffs of Aqua One Centers (AOCs), members of NGOs, entrepreneurs, progressive farmers and students. The participants in their interaction session expressed their expectations from the training and their intentions and plans to promote the enclosure culture techniques, after this ToT programme.
