Ranching and awareness program of seed of Indian Major Carp like Catla, Rohu, Mrigal in the Ganga river was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Allahabad/Barrackpore under NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga) to restore and conserve the depleting fish stock on 5.12.2017 at Singrerpur, Allahabad.In this program ranching of 7500 advance fingerling of IMCs was done in River Ganga at the bank of Singrerpur. While welcoming the participants in the program Dr. R. S. Shrivastava, Head of division,ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute Allahabad explained about the depleting the environment of river Ganga and its impact on biodiversity, fish biodiversity affecting the livelihoods of fishermen community. He also explained ecosystem concept of developing, restoring and conserving fish biodiversity and impacting on abundances or availability of fishes in river. He emphasised on deteriorating ecosystem health degrading habitat, food web structure, industrial effluents and ecology of river. He addressed the issues behind causes and reason behind the threatened, endangered and extinct fish species in river Ganga while explaining causes of dominance of exotic fish species like Talipia. Dr.Shrivastava focused the issues relating to construction of Barrages, Habitat modification, influent discharge, adverse impact of deforestation on survival, growth and breeding behaviour of fishes of river Ganga. The abstraction affecting the flow of water in river Ganga has not only affected the breeding but also had an adverse impact on migratory fishes. The pollution has been discussed as important factor affecting the availability fishes in river Ganga. Dr.AbsarAlam, Scientist of this institute has coordinated the program and appraised the importance of ranching program. He informed to audience that ranching program is an important component of Namami Gange program identified as important source to increase the density of population of depleting fish stock of river Ganga. He explained the detailed plan of future for ranching from Uttar Kashi to Farraka. He welcomed to the important guest from different organizations like, Ganga VicharManch, Allahabad University, Department of Fisheries, local leaders, MLA/MP of the region and other NGO including, FRI, Zoological Survey of India and CEE. The representatives of the department has raised vital issues of concern to restore and revive river Ganga. An interaction was held among the stake holders where Dr DN Jha, Dr SCS Das, Dr Jitendra Kumar, Dr Vanktesh Thakur, Dr Rahul Das, Dr Kalpana Srivastava, Dr Saket Srivastava, Dr Vijay Kumar, Sushil Kumar, HariomVerma, Sandeep Mishra and other CIFRI staff took discussion in program. More than 50 fishermen community and six news papers including UNI, PTI, ANI participated in program. At the end of the program press conference with media was important and lively moment of this program receiving wider media coverage. The ended with a vote of thanks by Dr DN Jha acknowledging role of media and local fishermen with a caution note that brooder stocks and juvenile fishes will not be caught in river during breeding season. Allahabad demonstrated his ability to make the event successful with lessons of making program batter in future.
