CIFRI Awards
A skill development program was organized for 44 fishermen and women from various places of West Bengal including Sundarbans at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 01-03 August 2019 on “Culture and Conservation of Small Indigenous fishes for Livelihood and Nutritional Security”. The participants came from Madangunj, Sagar island, Mayna, and Gardanmari of Burdwan district and included tribal fishermen and women. Among the participants around 12 were women participants as women assume special importance regarding culture and conservation of SIFs. The program is sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution Scheme. The trainees were trained on various aspects of SIFs and livelihood opportunities through culture of SIFs. Dr. B.K Das, Director CIFRI took a class on high value SIF culture and orient the fishers/farmers about the need of conservation of these high value fishes. The training programme ended with collection of feedback from the institute and a formal valedictory session. The trainees engaged themselves in interaction with the resource persons and clarified their queries. While interaction Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI requested the trainees to further disseminate their knowledge and learning from the training programme among other fishermen of their respective regions. This training programme is expected to be helpful for the trainees by opening up new income generating and employment opportunities for them aiding to their livelihood security.
