Skill improvement of Madhubani farmers on Inland Fisheries Management – An approach to doubling income
Atma, Madhubani, Bihar sponsored skill development program was organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Head Quarter, Barrackpore with able participation of twenty two farmers of Madhubani, during 31 Aug to 04 Sept, 2019. Inaugurating the 5-days training program on Inland Fisheries Management and Development by Dr. B.K Das, Director, invoked the importance of skill improvement of the farmers on various aspects of inland fisheries management for securing their livelihood besides developing nutri-smart villages through aquaculture and fisheries. In Madhubani, with a population of more than 46 lakhs, there are perennial and seasonal water bodies including mauns and chaurs, where ample scope of livelihood improvement persists through development of fisheries and aquaculture. Such training program, targets to develop the knowledge, skill and attitude of the farmers towards inland fisheries management. The programme was further oriented encompassing the practical skill of the farmers for enhancing the fish production in open waters viz., mauns, chaurs, ponds & tanks etc. through field practicals, field exposure visits, demonstrations and class room sessions. Prof. A. P. Sharma, former Director of CIFRI and present Registrar, GBPUAT, Pantnagar in his inaugural address urged the farmers to apply the knowledge gained during training program in the respective fields so as to make the wise-use of such training fruitfully. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, FREM Division, CIFRI imbibed the farmers for small scale fisheries to develop nutri-smart villages in surrounding areas of Madhubani. The trainees were also took part in cultural program in the evening hours while celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at CIFRI. The program was culminated with interactive session between farmers and scientists followed by feedback duly received from the participants.
