CIFRI Awards
With the aim to rstore prized fishes of river Ganga like Rohu (Rehu), Catla (Bhakur), Mrigel (Naini) and Kalbasu (Keronchi) commonly known as Indian Major Carp (IMC)ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore with the support from Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Bihar performed a river ranching programme at Law College Ghat, Patna , Bihar on 20.11.2019.The programme was participated by several Officials from State Fisheries Departmentincluding Director of Fisheries. The programme started with the release of more than 40,000 of Major Carp seeds in the river follwed by a brief programme. Dr. Ranjan Kumar Manna, Pr. Scientist and Co-PrincipalInvestigator of NMCG Project welcomed everyone with a brief note on the importance of ranching and conserving the fishes of river Ganga in the context of improvement of livelihood of poor fishers. Mr. Nishat Ahmed, Joint Director, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Bihar requested the fishers for their co- operation regarding conservation of fisheries of river Ganga to promote successful livelihood enhancement. Dr. Raman K. Trivedi, Director (Students’ Welfare), BASU, Patna, requested the gathering for concerted efforts by researchers and fishers to increase the fish production of the river. Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute and Principal Investigator of the present ongoing ‘Namami Gange’ project highlighted that the prime aim of the project is to promote of restoration of these four prized Major Carps in River Ganga in all selected sites of the river in different states of the country. More than 19 lakhs fish seed have already been stocked by ICAR-CIFRI in different parts of river Ganga through 25 programmes during last 2 years. He also expressed his serious concern about the ongoing loss of aquatic biodiversity due to irrational fishing. Dr. Das expressed his gratitude and discussed various issues related to Namami Gange programe adopted by Govt. of India. Giving credit to the efforts of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries and Research Institute and the Namami Gange project, Chief Guest of the occasion Mr. V. S. Gunjiyal, Director, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Bihar praised efforts of CIFRI to restore prized IMC fishery and requested for more such efforts for restoration of other prized fish like hilsa. Tributaries of river Ganga also may be ranched in addition to main stream, he added. He assured for more cooperation and support from State Fisheries Department to ICAR-CIFRI for all such efforts. The program was also attended and supported by other state fisheries official like Mr. Bipin Kumar, DFO, Patna, Mr. Suman Kumar, Dy. Director, Patna, etc. The program ended with the formal ‘Vote of Thanks’ by Dr. Raju Baitha, Scientist, CIFRI. The event was attended by more than 50 no. of local fishermen.
