Many tribal women are economically backward and find difficulties in maintaining their livelihood in rural areas of India. Ornamental fish keeping is one of the best options for self employment and livelihood improvement in the rural areas. ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute took a programme to create ornamental fish villages in Mayurbanj district to improve and sustain the livelihood of the tribal women under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). A self help group (SHG) were formed by the tribal women of Talapda and Nalagaja village of Mayurbanj District, Odisha. Recently, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore has conducted capacity building programme for 40 tribal women of Mayurbanj in the institute for ornamental fish development under TSP.
The Director, ICAR-CIFRI distributed 40 ornamental fish unit to 9 SHG constituted by 18 tribal women of Talapada village and 22 tribal women of Nalagaja village, Mayurbanj on 14.11.2019 in the presence of Mr. Surendra Kumar Ghadei DFO, Mayurbanj, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Odisha and Basanta Kumar Prusty, Block Development Officer. The Ornamental fish unit includes 300 litre capacity tank, aerator, heater, aquatic plant, medicines, feeds, covering nets, extension wire and ornamental fish of live bearer guppy, molly and sward tail. The ornamental fish unit was installed and demonstrated in the villages by CIFRI team under the guidance of the Director, ICAR-CIFRI so that the tribal women will able to run the ornamental unit by themselves to maintain their livelihood. Arrangements were made to tie up with the Amazon group for selling the ornamental fish produced by the tribal women.
On the same day ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute conducted a sensitization programme on development of ornamental fisheries for the two villages.The programme was conducted Talapada, Mayurbanj in the first half . of the day and the second programme was conducted at Nalagaja village, Mayurbanj in the second half of the day. The institute sensitized and mobilized the tribal women for ornamental fish keeping as an alternative livelihood and income generation. The Director interacted with the tribal women on ornamental fisheries and its scope for self employment generation for women in the rural area. He emphasized that the economic importance of ornamental fisheries has been recognized by many developing countries for employment generation and livelihoods improvement. He also informed them that ornamental fish keeping is one of the best options for low-income and small scale farmers which can be easily carried out in the rural area. Dr. U.K. Sarkar HoD, Resrvoir and Wetland Fisheries Division, ICAR-CIFRI also sensitized the villagers about the importance of ornamental fish keeping.Dr. A.K. Das, I/C Extension and Training Cell, ICAR-CIFRI also encouraged the villagers to take up ornamental fisheries and harness the scheme promoted by the Central Govt. for their livelihood improvement. Mr. Surendra Kumar Ghadei DFO, Mayurbanj, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Odisha and Basanta Kumar Prusty, Block Ddevelopment Oofficer and other block level officers were present and wholeheartedly supported the programme and advised the villagers to seriously take up and cooperate TSP programme and other Central Govt. scheme. The programme was coordinated by Dr.Lianthuamluaia and Mr. H. S Swain with the help of the officials of DoF, Govt. of Odisha
