ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, Kolkata-700 120, organized a five day Training of Trainers programme (ToT) from 02nd – 06th December, 2019, sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad on “Fish Health Management of Inland Cultured Fishes for Doubling Farmer’s Income” under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and the training programme was coordinated by Dr. B. K. Behera, Principal Scientist, Dr. A. K. Bera, Principal Scientist, Dr. Raju Baitha, Scientist and Ms. M. Shaya Devi, Scientist of ICAR-CIFRI. Total 25 participants from state fisheries department and entrepreneurs of various states attended the programme comprising five from Chhattisgarh, three from Haryana, two each from Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Telangana; three entrepreneurs from West Bengal and eight research scholar from ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. The training programme focussed on various aspects of emerging fish and shellfish diseases of inland cultured fishes, conventional and advanced diagnostic approaches including immunological and molecular diagnosis and control and treatment management and role of aquatic environment in fish health management. Feeding management in enclosure culture and eco-health management in reservoir were also included in the course curricula. The more emphasis was given on practical exposure on soil and water chemistry and collection, preservation and dispatch for laboratory diagnosis of fish disease and preventive and curative use of drugs and chemicals along application of better management practices in fish culture. Under the training programme, Dr. T. J. Abraham and Dr. Gadadhar Das of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Chakgaria, Kolkata delivered on the bacterial, parasitic and fungal diseases and their control and treatment in culture fishes.
Attending the valedictory session of the programme, Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Director (In-charge), ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore stressed upon the importance of field level diagnosis of fish diseases and management in connection to enhanced fish production and climate change. He also advised the officers to implement better management practices of fish farming for improving the farm production to help in doubling their farm income.
