Capacity building of fishers from Saran District of Bihar towards Income Augmentation through Inland Fishery Management
Realizing the importance of inland fishery sector for income augmentation of rural population, ICAR-CIFRI organized a week long Skill Development and Capacity Building Programme on inland Fishery Management for fishers of Saran District of Bihar during 03 to 09 December 2019 at the Institute Headquarter at Barrackpore. A total of 29 fishers participated in the programme. They have been trained on various aspects of inland fishery management such as, fish health management, feed management, natural fish food organism, water quality management, nursery management, composite fish culture, fresh water prawn culture, ornamental fish culture etc. Besides, hands on practical sessions were arranged on water quality analysis, feed preparation, and identification of fish pathogens and analysis of biotic communities. An exposure visit to the Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and Hatchery Unit of the Institute was also arranged for them. They also visited Naihati Seed farm, East Kolkata Wetland, ICAR-CIFA, Kalyani, Khamargachhi, and ICAR-CIFE, Salt Lake Centre as part of the training programme. While addressing the participants in the valedictory session, the Scientists of the Institute insisted the participants to engage themselves in fishery related income generating and profit-making activities. The training programme was initiated with need assessment of the participants and it ended with a feedback session for further improvement in future training programmes. The training program is expected to pave the way for the participants to augment their family income through efficient fishery management.
