Training programme on “Advances in enumeration and taxonomic identification of plankton community in inland open waters” organised at ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata. While highlighting the key role of plankton in maintaining functionality of aquatic food chain, Dr. U. K. Sarkar, HOD RWF division urged to work for developing plankton based models based for assesing climatic variability as a potential tool for inland open water ecocysystems. The five days training programme was aimed at the theoretical and practical demonstration of plankton collection, enumeration and systematic classification using molecular taxonomy including application of species specific sequence blast in for molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis. The training has also aid to identify the major groups of phytoplankton taxonomically alongwith hands on practice to classify calanoid and cyclopoid zooplankton under dissection microscope and further by molecular tool cooected from natural ecosystem. During the training course, the learners were very much associated with handling microscope for identification, haemocytometer and sedgewick rafter cell enumeration, phytoopankton biomass and Trophic state index analysis etc. In addition to these, there was a special session from external experts from various Universities and organisations. Dr. P. Bhaduri, Professor, IISER, Kolkata has elaborately explained the role of coastal phytoplankton with specical emphasis on satellite image spectrum in and along Sundarban eco-region. Dr. B. C. Jha, Former HoD, RWF Division have given a overview on the application of saprobic index for assessment of inland waters. Dr. Neera Sen Sarkar, University of Kalyani has prioritized the vaious morphological traits for identification of environmental phytoplankton also urged the researchers to varify the light micrographs with scanning electron micrographs for better delineation. The training program ended with graceful presence of Dr. Jie Huang, Director General, NACA and Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI in the validictory session. The guest has appreciated the organisers for successful conduction of such training programme which has acted as guiding tool for the researchers who specifically works on such glamourous filed. The content of training programme was appreciated by Director General, NACA and suggested to organise international training programme on plankton ecology. A training manual entitled “Advances in enumeration and taxonomic identification of plankton community in inland open waters” was also released on this occasion. The Course Director of the Training Programme was Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR – CIFRI, and the Training was co-ordinated by Dr. Suman Kumari, Dr. Soma Das Sarkar.
