CIFRI Awards
Research Centre, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Bangalore successfully organised the mass awareness programme on reservoir fisheries management and demonstration of pen culture for fingerling raising at Harangi reservoir, Karnataka for tribal fishermen under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). Mass awareness program organised on 11th December, 2019 was attended by officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, stake holders and tribal fishers. Demonstration programme was held on 11th December, 2019 for CIFRI HDPE pen installation, seed stocking, pre - and post stocking management and feed management strategies were detailed to fisher folks. The species stocked was Labeo rohita. The pen structure (0.1 ha) re-installed in Harangi reservoir, will be mainly used for raising fry to fingerlings. The fingerlings when they attain the size of about 100 mm will be stocked in the reservoir. About 70 fishermen of the Cauvery Fishermen cooperative society attended the demonstration programme. The program was attended by Assistant Director of fisheries, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Karnataka and office bearer of Cauvery Fishermen cooperative society. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist and Officer-in-charge welcomed the gathering and spoke on pen structure installed at the reservoir and its relevance for enhancing fish production from these water bodies for improving livelihood of the tribal people dependant on fishing. Miss V.L. Ramya, Scientist detailed the importance of pen culture and the management plans. The Assistant director of fisheries briefed the importance of participatory mode of fisher’s and their involvement for the success of this pen demonstration. Mr. Vijaykumar, Sr. Technical Assistant explained the stocking plans, delivered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR- CIFRI, Barrackpore for the support.
