Capacity building programme for the fishers of Gopalgang district of Bihar on Inland Fisheries Management

A 7 days training programme on “Fisheries management in Inland waters” has been organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore from 17-23rd December 2019 as a part of skill development and capacity building programme for fishers of Gopalganj. 28 active fishers have participated in the programme. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. He stressed on the need and skill development of the fishers on various aspects of Inland fisheries management to ensure their sustainable livelihood security. As a part of the training, they were exposed to theoretical and practical knowledge along with field visits. The topics have been covered on different aspects of inland fisheries management, including soil and water quality management, natural fish food organisms, feed management, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional aspects of fishes, fish health management, wetland fisheries management, cage and pen culture techniques, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing, etc. To expose them in different fisheries activities, field visits to ICAR-CIFA Kalyani fish farms, Khamargachi private fish farms, Naihati fish seed farms, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), Galiff street ornamental fish markets, etc. were visited. The activities and functions of the Institute Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and hatchery units also explained them in a detailed manner. Besides the theoretical classes’ hands-on practical sessions also been arranged on different need-based aspects like vital water parameters, fish feed preparation using locally available feed ingredients, fish pathogens identification and their respective treatment measures, etc.

The valedictory session was chaired by the Director, CIFRI, Barrackpore, along with Dr. U.K. Sarkar, Dr. S. Samanta and Dr. Archana Sinha. The Director conveyed that, the participated farmers should carry forward the knowledge earned during the training programme for horizontal expansion and keep in touch with the Institute for any difficulties faced during fish culture practices. He also emphasised on entrepreneurial opportunities in the fisheries sector which can be achieved through better marketing and business skills. The overall training programme has been coordinated and co-coordinated by Dr. Archan K. Das and Dr. Dibakar Bhakta, respectively.
