CIFRI Awards
The Regional Centre of ICAR-CIFRI in Guwahati had successfully carried out culture of medium carp, Labeo gonius in CIFRI-GI cages installed in Samaguri beel, Nagaon district, Assam under the projects ‘Diversification of enclosure culture in reservoirs and wetlands’ and ‘NEH component of CIFRI’. Fingerlings of Labeo gonius (av. Wt. 4.5 g) were stocked in 16 ICAR-CIFRI GI-cages (individual cage dimension of 5 x 5 x 2 m) and reared for 6 months. The fishes were fed CIFRI CageGrow feed twice-a-day @ 3-5% body weight. After the 6 months culture period, the fish had grown to a maximum weight of 150 g and an average weight of 100 g per individual. On the occasion of final harvesting of fish, a field day was conducted on 21.12.19 at Samaguri beel cage culture site to share the results with the fishery officers, fishers and other participants on cage farming of indigenous species having high local demand and solicit suggestions for future experiments.
The field day was attended by senior Fishery Development Officer, Shri A. H. Siddique, Dept. of Fisheries, Nagaon district, Assam; Mr. Kaustauv Bhagawati, Asst. Professor, College of Fisheries, AAU, Raha; Ms. Jyotirmoyee Das, Technical Expert, APART; Shri Bhumidhar Das, Beel lessee of Samaguri beel; Scientists (Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Dr. Pronob Das and Mr. A. K. Yadav), Technical staff (Mr. Amulya Kakati) and Research scholar (T. Victor Anal) of ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and more than 30 fishers. Welcoming the dignitaries and participants, Dr. Dipesh Debnath gave a brief background of the cage culture demonstrations carried out in Samaguri beel. He mentioned that ICAR-CIFRI, Fisheries College and Department of Fisheries were all working towards sustainable utilization of natural waterbodies for livelihood improvement of beel fishers. Dr. Sona Yengkokpam and Dr. Pronob Das shared about the past experiments on cage culture conducted in Samaguri beel. Dr. Das urged the Department of Fisheries and Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd. that the successful results of cage culture in Samaguri beel be disseminated to fishers of other districts for their possible replication.
Shri Siddique requested the beel fishers to take up utmost interest in adopting enclosure culture technologies in beels as these technologies have immense potential in enhancing productivity of the waterbody. Mr. Kaustauv Bhagawati expressed satisfaction on fish production from cages and requested the fishers to take up the technology for their own benefit. Shri Bhumidhar Das expressed his happiness over the fish produced from the cages. The fishers were thankful to ICAR-CIFRI for carrying out the cage culture demonstration in this beel and pledged to work unitedly for the development of beel fisheries. Mr. Amulya Kakati presented the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to Dr. B.K. Das, Director and PI, Enclosure culture project, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati & Nodal Officer-NEH Component for their constant encouragement and support.
