ICAR-CIFRI conducted a Skill Development Programme on ‘Wetland fisheries management’ in collaboration with Directorate of Fisheries, Manipur at Imphal

A skill development programme (SDP) on ‘Wetland fisheries management of Manipur for livelihood improvement’ was organized by ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur (GoM), Imphal West during Feb. 10-12, 2020. The training programme was attended by 50 fishers nominated by the Department of Fisheries, Manipur. Important aspects of wetland (pats) fisheries viz. Fisheries of Manipur, need for conservation and sustainable utilization of pats, enclosure culture technologies (i.e., pen and cage culture) for pat fisheries enhancement, fish feed and nutrition, fish health management, soil and water quality management, fisheries legislations, etc. were discussed during the SDP. A field visit to Loktak and Takmu pat where pen and cage culture demonstrations are carried out was also conducted on 11/02/20 for practical exposure.

The valedictory session was graced by Shri G. Aguilung Kabui, Joint Director, Directorate of Fisheries, GoM; Shri N. Hemchandra, DFO, Churachandpur district, GoM and Dr B. K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist & Head of Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati. Dr. S. Yengkokpam, Sr. Scientist & Coordinator of the programme, welcomed the dignitaries, Scientists, staff of Department of Fisheries and participants. She thanked the Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Dr. B.K. Das and Director of Fisheries, GoM, Mr. N. Gojendro for making it possible for conducting the programme. Mr. S.C.S. Das, Scientist & Convenor presented a brief report on the SDP. Shri N. Hemchandra encouraged the fishers to carry out fish farming using scientific techniques imparted to them through this programme. Shri G. Aguilung Kabui pointed out that training is a very important step in fish farming. Since Manipur is a fish-loving state, all stakeholders should work cohesively for increasing the fish production in the state. Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya thanked the Department of Fisheries, Manipur for their help extended to CIFRI. He urged the trainees to utilize the knowledge gained in improving production and productivity of the water resources of the state. Shri A. Momo Singh, Fishery Inspector & Co-convenor of the SDP delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was anchored by Ms. Sarina Huidrom, Fishery Inspector.
