Capacity building programme on “Development and Management of Pen and Cage culture in Tripura” for tribal fishers of Tripura organised at ICAR-CIFRI.
ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized capacity building programme on “Development and Management of Pen and Cage culture in Tripura” for fish farmers of Dumbur reservoir of Tripura from 25-29 February 2020. 42 tribal fishers (38 men and 4 women, belonging to Chakma and Tripura tribes) and 2 fisheries officials of Dhalai district of Tripura participated in this programme. The programme was sponsored by Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director in his inaugural address stressed on the urgent need of doubling fishers income by 2022 on the line with the call given by honourable Prime Minister for doubling farmers income. He emphasized that the two CIFRI technologies namely pen culture and cage culture if adopted in the reservoir will doubled the fish production and help in augmenting the fishers income. He appealed to the fishers of Tripura to share the knowledge gathered at this capacity building programme with other fishers of Dumbur lake as well as other fishers of the district.
The tribal fishers were trained on different aspects of cage and pen culture technologies namely design and construction of pen and cage, environmental consideration for sustainable enclosure culture, feed and feeding management in cage and pen culture, species selection, seed and table fish production in cage and pen. The trainees were also exposed to recirculatory aquaculture system and ornamental fish hatchery unit of the institute. Study tour of Beledanga wetland was organized for practical demonstration of pen culture and to ICAR-CIFA, Kalyani centre to various aspects of aquaculture. This programme is expected to increase the knowledge and skill of the tribal community for livelihood enhancement and increase in fish production in Dumbur reservoir.
ICAR-CIFRI has commercialized and licensed two technologies namely “CIFRI GI Cage” structure and “CIFRI Pen HDPE” in the year 2017. The trainees got firsthand knowledge on these two technologies.
