The district Nawada of Bihar is very resourceful in terms of Inland open waters like rivers, chaurs, floodplain wetlands, oxbow lakes and reservoirs. In spite of abundant aquatic resources the supply of adequate fish is short of demand in the State of Bihar. By seeing the need of fishers of Nawada district a 7 day skilled training programme on “ Inland Fisheries management” was been organized at ICAR-CIFRI,Barrackpore from 11 to 17 february 2020 as a part of skill development and capacity building programme with a mission to increase the fishers’ income. A total of 29 active fishers have participated in the programme. While inaugurating the programme the Director of the Institute, Dr. B.K.Das emphasised on the skill development of the fishers on various aspects of Inland fisheries management to ensure their sustainable livelihood security. As a part of the training, they were exposed to theoretical and practical knowledge along with field visits. The topics have been covered on different aspects of inland fisheries management , including soil and water quality management, natural fish food organisms, feed management, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional aspects of fishes, fish health management, wetland fisheries management, cage and pen culture techniques, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing etc. The trainees were exposed to the Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and hatchery unit of the Institute. To expose them in different fisheries activities, field visits to ICAR-CIFA Kalyani fish farms, CIFE, Kolkata, Khamargachi private fish farms, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), and Galiff street ornamental fish markets were visited. The training programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Archan k. Das, Principal scientist and In-charge, Extension & Training Cell and Ms. Sukanya,Scientist,ICAR-CIFRI,Barrackpore.
