Efforts for knowledge and skill enhancement of the fishers of Bhagalpur district of Bihar for income augmentation
Based on information and training need of the Bhagalpur district of Bihar a seven days training programme was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 18 to 24 February 2020. Bhagalpur district of Bihar is very resourceful in terms of Inland open waters. However, the district is yet to witness its highest potential in terms of fish production due to lack of scientific intyerventions. The training programme was organized with the aim to increase the fishers’ income. A total of 31 active fishers participated in the programme. While inaugurating the programme the Director of the Institute, Dr. B.K. Das emphasised on the skill development of the fishers on various aspects of Inland Fisheries Management to ensure their sustainable livelihood security. He also stressed on income generating opportunities from inland fisheries. Theoretical and practical knowledge along with field visits were imparted to the trainees. The topics have been covered on different aspects of inland fisheries management, including soil and water quality management, cage and pen culture techniques, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing etc. The trainees were exposed to the Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) and hatchery unit of the Institute. To expose them in different fisheries activities, field visits to ICAR-CIFA Kalyani fish farms,CIFE, Kolkata, Balagarh, East Kolkata wetlands (EKW), and Galiff street ornamental fish markets were visited.
