ICAR-CIFRI tagged 100 numbers of Indian Major Carps and release in river Ganga to study migration behavior and movements of the fish under ‘Namami Gange’ project. The native carp fishery has continuously declined for past few decades due to various man made and environmental factors. ICAR-CIFRI conducted a series of ranching program during post lockdown period. As a part of the ranching program, tagging has been initiated on 16th June 2020 to monitor and developed proper sustainable management of exploited IMC fish stock in Ganga River system. During the process of tagging, adult fish more than 500g of Indian Major Carp (Labeo rohita, Labeo catla and Cirrhnus mrigala) popularly known as Rohu, Catla and Mrigal were tagged and release in the river Ganga. Floy T-bar anchor tags of standard size with printed serial numbers were inserted in muscle just below the dossal fin. The tagged fishes were further treated with antiseptic and potassium permanganate solution before releasing to the river to identify the fundamentals of migration range. The tagged fishes were produced through artificial breeding of native fish species of River Ganga. The activities of tagging were carried out under the guidance of Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and PI, CIFRI-NMCG project. He further mentioned the importance of tagging process and sensitized the local fisherman about the purpose in tagging. Awareness among the local fishers was also created maintaining social distance and requested to cooperate for prevention from catching the tagged IMC fish stock on immediate basis. The process was successfully operated by NMCG team of ICAR-CIFRI and covered by electronics and printed media.
