Post Amphan Support extended by ICAR-CIFRI in Covid 19 Unlock-3 under TSP/SCSP.

Cyclone Amphan slammed into the coastal region of West Bengal on the 20th May, 2020 and Sundarbans area was the most affected region in west Bengal. Wind speeds of 150-160 kilometres per hour were recorded in the coastal areas once the cyclone made landfall. Cyclone Amphan caused widespread damage in West Bengal, especially the Sundarban area that left the locals crying in despair. Many of the blocks Basanti, Gosaba, Kultali, Kakdwip, Namkhana, Patharpramima in South 24 Parganas and Minakha, Sandeshkhali, Hingalganj and Hasnabad in North 24 Parganas were ravaged due to that Super Cyclone. COVID19 pandemic, has made of the situation worst, the livelihoods of the Tribal beneficiaries are now under threat.

ICAR-CIFRI is working in Sundarban area for up scaling the socio-economic condition of the marginalized community since 2013. During amphan in Sundarban areas there was huge fish mortality and the water quality was deteriorated. In the adopted villages, the Team CIFRI advised the beneficiaries for immediate cleaning of the ponds manually by removing of all the fallen parts of trees from the ponds and removing the bottom organic matter as much as possible. Team also recommended the dose of lime application according to their water areas for restoring the water quality. Due to COVID19 pandemic and lock down situation, technical advisories were given over telephone. To cope up with this fragile state, ICAR-CIFRI also distributed fisheries inputs support to the tribal populace of Gosaba(58) and Sagar Island(105).

Basanti Block of South Twenty Four Parganas district has total population of 336,717 as per the Census 2011. Out of which 35% belongs to Schedule Caste and 6% belongs to Schedule Tribe Population. To support the livelihoods of the populace of marginalized community ICAR-CIFRI hold the hands with Kultali Milan Tirtha, a non profit making organization to reaching the unreached of Kultali, Basanti. Dr. B.K Das distributed 5000kg lime, 2.5 tonnes fish feed and 900 kg fish seed to 256 fishers’ family (SC-196 and ST-60). He also declared that in Kultali ICAR-CIFRI will establish three Ornamental fish Unit to support the livelihoods of the women of the marginalized community. Dr. B.K Das also released fish seed in the ponds of the ST beneficiaries. Technical guidance was also provided to them by Dr. U.K Sarkar,HOD,REF Division by maintaining all the safety measures of Covid-19. On this occasion for the development of SC/ST student the pond of Higher Secondary School of Kultali was adopted and was stocked with 6000 fish seed. The programme was well coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Scientist, Dr. P.K Parida, Scientist, Dr. Sanjay Bhawmick, CTO, Sri L. Chakraboarty,TO and Sri K.Mandal, TA.
